My Travels

One of my main objectives in life is to be well traveled. As a child, my parent took all the kids around the USA. Each summer and during the year, well traveled everywhere. I think there are only five states I haven't been to, but I will go to those some day (Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, North Dakota, & Vermont). I have been fortunately to have visited Hong Kong, China, The Netherlands, Russia, Ireland, and of course, Mexico and Canada. The trip I made to China in 1995 with my brother-in-law was amazing. Going to Amsterdam will also be a trip I will remember. I traveled to Russia when I was seventeen - I only wish I had the respect for different cultures as I do now (if I only knew then...).

Since January 1999, I've made trips to Amsterdam, Nashville, Washington, D.C., New Orleans, Chicago, Savannah, Kansas City for the Big 12 Basketball Tournament, Galveston, Louisville, and Jackson, Vicksburg, Port Gibson, Natchez, Mississippi and other places. Also, I've been back to San Francisco, St. Louis for a KISS concert. I've been to Las Vegas, Orlando, almost all of Wyoming (my brother lives in Casper), and the Alabama coast line. In 2002, I visited Ireland, New Jersey, Oregon, Chicago, and Detroit.

My work provides me with the opportunity for a lot of travel. I almost always add a few days at the end or the beginning of many trips to see the sites. Because of my work on federal grants, I travel to Washington, D.C. often. I have recently started doing audits for a national performance measurement organization, which means I get to travel out of Oklahoma at least two times a year.

When I travel, I like to stay comfortably, but not extravagant. I rather stay in a $125 room than a $200 room. The extra money I can use to buy gifts and enjoy good meals. Every once and a while, I'm happy to splurge a bit. One visit to DC, my ex and I stayed in a very nice suite during Valentines. I do refuse to stay at cheap motels. I'm tired of rooms with cigarette burns on the carpet and bathroom sink. I travel to enjoy and have fun, not to see how cheaply I can do it. I've worked to hard to not to enjoy life.

One of my long-term goals is to visit England and Scotland, but not necessarily all at once. I definitely want to go back to Asia, and maybe, even China. I've been to Cancun, and wouldn't mind going back there. I would also like to go to Brazil, Costa Rica, and Belize. For what every reason I have no desire to go to Australia - but if a free ticket was involve, I'm there. I've done the cruise thing. It was OK, but way too much time to drink and party.

Depending on where I go and whom I am with depends on what I like to do. In Chicago, we went to a Cubs game, drove up to Milwaukee to the Harley-Davidson factory (my buddies both own Harleys) and the Miller brewing company. While in Washington, D.C., I really enjoy the National Gallery of Art. In Mississippi, I visited a Civil War battlefield and saw a ton of old mansions. In San Francisco, we went to Sonoma Valley for wine tours. In New Orleans, Bourbon Street until 2 or 3 in the morning (ouch!). In Savannah, I spent a large amount of time just walking around the beach looking for shells.

I do enjoy visiting brewpubs when I travel. You will probably see a lot of photos of me with sampler plates. No, I don’t drink them all by myself - I usually have help. If possible, I always try to collect two beer glasses from the places I visit.
