The Adoption of Hope Lian-Wan Vinson
by Mark A. Reynolds
Introduction
| I hope you find these pages interesting. It was an amazing
adventure to adopt my new niece, Hope Lian-Wan Vinson. The pages are heavily
laden with
graphics and text. PLEASE HELP. I could really use some assistance in editing these pages. If you see a picture that is mislabeled, or any type of error, please let me know. My memory is fading fast. ;-) Email me at okctraveler@yahoo.com. Each day of the journey has it's own page. My narration style is mostly straight-forward; what we did, what we eat, and the things we saw. As these pages evolve, I hope to add more reflection on the journey. The family pages where fun to do. I think it makes it fun for the families that we went with to see all their pictures in one place. The links aren't the greatest, just something I add for my sister and other families. You can also read about my bid to get another trip back to China. Hey, it's worth a shot! I've scanned the images in at a medium quality. Just click on a smaller picture (thumbnail) to see a larger one. I took over 800 photographs, but only scanned in 400. This took forever. I hope it was worth my effort. One thing you should know about taking pictures in urban China: bring a haze filter. The smog is terrible and causes a lot of problem when you take pictures that have sky in the background. Almost all my pictures with sky look gray. I guess you can always buy postcards, which I did anyway. After re-reading my journal and creating the pages you are about to read, it sure seemed like I complained about a lot of things. Everything took forever to happen. But as I reflect upon the trip, it was more amazing than I could have imagined. Instead of editing my notes from my journal, I've decided to leave them intact. And even though it sounds like I'm whining, it was just a new place where the locus of control was beyond me. |
![]() I have borrow liberally from Lonely Planet's Guide to China. I've tried to note when I have used their text or graphics. |
Overview
From April 26th, 1996 to May 14th, 1996, Fred Vinson traveled to Guangzhou (Canton), China. With him was your narrator. Before we left, we thought the trip would go quickly and smoothly. And although it was slow and bumpy along the way, the ultimate goal was a worthy venture. Hope Lian-Wan Vinson was to be adopted from orphanage in Danbai, China. Having no children of my own, helping care for an infant was going to be a challenge. Fortunately, Fred has two boys and is a OB/GYN.
While the trip took longer than we expected, it provided us the opportunity to adventure around Canton. The city is wonderful, but the traffic and smog distract from such a beautiful place. The food was always great, with beer and soda always available from the U.S. So let us begin in my home town, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma...
